Hang In There

“For you have need of endurance, so that when you have done the will of God you may receive what is promised.” Hebrews 10:36

Do you ever feel like your attention span is getting shorter? It might not be your imagination. Research seems to indicate that the average human attention span is shrinking. We are more easily distracted than ever before. This often means we have trouble finishing the tasks that we start. People today find it hard to commit to watching a two-hour movie. If it gets boring, you just stop it and look for another one online.

Social norms are in a state of transition. The full impact this will have on the spiritual formation of Christians is not yet known. What is known is that to grow into fully devoted followers of Jesus, you need endurance. Christian discipleship doesn’t happen overnight. It’s not an app that can be quickly downloaded. You must get up each morning and commit yourself anew to following Jesus and letting him transform you.

Along the way, there are many distractions and discouragements. You may be tempted to take a short cut or to abandon the pathway all together. There are many things that demand your attention. But don’t give up. Don’t stop following Jesus. Go against the grain of this world and commit for the long term. The promises of God are waiting for you.
