What would you do? A woman recently shared on the internet that her fiancé’s family offered her $10,000 to break up with him. His parents apparently didn’t feel she was right for their son. The couple had dated for a number of years and were engaged, but no wedding date had been set.
She decided to take the money. His behavior had changed and she was having second thoughts about the whole relationship. When the potential in-laws made the offer of money, she took it. She has no regrets. The parents and the women both agreed not to tell the guy about their agreement. (Let’s hope he doesn’t read about it on the internet.)
I’m not sure how I feel about someone taking a bribe to break up with a partner, although the woman in question certainly was free to break off the engagement. As this rather extreme story shows, personal relationships are hard to navigate these days. Many people want a relationship but feel insecure about committing to a partner. It’s hard to be open and vulnerable with someone if you aren’t sure of their love and support.
The great thing about God is that his love never changes. He is upfront about his position. He loves us while fully aware of all our faults. He loves us no matter how many times we mess up. That doesn’t mean that he wants us to stay the way we are, but his love for us doesn’t change. He will never walk away from us because he gets a better offer. He will never tire of showing his loving kindness towards us. This is why our relationship with God is foundational to all other things in life. We can count on it no matter what.
Give thanks to the God of heaven.
His love endures forever.
(Psalm 136:26)
