I need to take the tram to work more often…you just never know when you might come across something valuable! A couple weeks ago, I read a newspaper article about a couple who left their backpack on the tram here in Basel. They were in town visiting their daughter when they absent-mindedly got off without their bag.
I guess that can easily happen. I know I’ve forgotten an umbrella on the tram before. If you aren’t paying attention and start day-dreaming, you could wind up forgetting something. Except that, in this case, the couple had 144’000 Francs – in cash – in this particular bag. The Swiss are known for carrying around a lot of cash, but even by Swiss standards…that is a lot of money! How on earth did they forget that bag on the tram?
Incredibly, several people got on the tram, sat down near the bag and never touched it. They were sitting next to a tidy sum and didn’t even know it. It wasn’t until the end of the line when the driver checked out the cars that he found the bag and contacted the police. Amazingly, the owners got everything back.
We would all love to hit the jackpot and find a pile of cash. It probably won’t happen. The good news is that we have something far more valuable: “The decrees of the Lord are firm, and all of them are righteous. They are more precious than gold, than much pure gold.” (Psalm 19:9-10)
It’s easy to overlook, but we are richly blessed because we have access to God’s Word at any point in time. Don’t go into the day and leave the Word behind – take it with you.
